Swim and Dive Closes out Regular Season

PAC-12 STREAM | FACEBOOK LIVE

PULLMAN, Wash.
– Idaho swim and dive closes out the regular season with a pair of meets on the Palouse this weekend. The Vandal swimmers will head to Pullman for a dual meet on Friday night, then return home to join the diving squad and compete against Dixie State on Saturday.

Friday's meet begins at 5 p.m. and will be streamed on the Pac-12 Network. Saturday's events get going with a special senior day celebration beginning at 10:50 a.m. and will streamed live at GoVandals.com/VandalAthletics.

The meets will serve as the final regular season competitions for the Vandals. Idaho will take on the Western Athletic Conference at the WAC Championships in late February.

Katie Hale will be the lone swimmer recognized prior to the meet on Saturday morning. Although just a junior athletically, Hale will be wrapping up her degree in environmental science with a social science option this spring.

"The fact that it's my last year here is really pushing me to be better," said Hale. "Having opportunities to be a leader on this team has also pushed me to be better in all aspects; not only as a leader but as a swimmer and as a friend and as a teammate."

Hale has been one of the top swimmers on the squad since joining the program and currently sits in second in Idaho history in two events. Her time of 23.13 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle is five one-hundredths of a second behind the all-time leader, Erica Anderson, who set her mark in 2014.

She is also second in the 100-yard backstroke with a personal best of 54.75 seconds. Shana Lim holds the Idaho record in the event at 53.00 seconds, set in 2011.

"Even though they're different strokes and different lengths, my events are very similar," said Hale back in November as the season was ramping up. "They're both sprints, and backstroke and freestyle are very similar strokes. I think that has enabled me to work with both of them."

When pressed for which event she prefers, Hale didn't have a preference. She did, however, have a different focus for what has meant the most to her at Idaho.

"I think it would be awesome either way, to get my name on the record board. Honestly, times aren't the most important thing to me," Hale said. "Being on this team has been so awesome, and I think that those memories are more important than any time I can swim."

Catch Hale and all the Vandals this weekend, live on the Pac-12 Network and Facebook Live.
