MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho women's basketball team announced its full 2021-22 schedule on Friday, highlighted by the grand opening of its new basketball venue, Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) Arena, on November 9.
Â
The Vandals will take on nine non-Big Sky Conference opponents, with three home games to start the season, two neutral site multi-team events, and a trip to Austin, Texas to face Big-12 power, the University of Texas.
"I'm really excited about our schedule this year, it is certainly going to challenge our team and really prepare us for Big Sky action," said Head Coach
Jon Newlee. "I think this is the strongest non-conference schedule I have put together in my 14 years here. Texas from the Big-12, plus Oregon State and Washington State from the PAC-12 – they each went to the NCAA tournament and were all nationally ranked last year. Throw in two top West Coast Conference schools (San Diego and San Francisco) and two top teams from the Missouri Valley Conference (Drake and Northern Iowa), and you can see what I mean."
Idaho will open up their schedule with the very first regular season contest in the newly constructed ICCU Arena against Lewis & Clark State College. The Vandals will stay at home on November 14 to take on the University of San Diego, and end their home stand by hosting rival Washington State on November 21 in the Battle of the Palouse.Â
The Vandals will then face their first road test as they travel to Reno, Nevada to participate in the Nugget Classic from November 26-28, where they'll take on San Francisco, the host-team Nevada, and Drake.Â
The Big Sky Conference slate begins on December 4, when the Vandals travel to Southern Utah, followed by the last two non-conference road trips of the year. On December 11, Idaho will go on the road to face the University of Texas, who advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2020-21.Â
Idaho will round out their non-conference schedule with a trip to the Hawaiian Islands to participate in the Maui Tournament. The Vandals will open up the tournament facing Oregon State on December 17, and will play the following day against Northern Iowa, who advanced to the WNIT Semifinals this past season.
"I know our team is really looking forward to competing against this outstanding group of teams," added Newlee. "Our goal is to be ready for whatever awaits us in the Big Sky, and this schedule will certainly do that."
The Vandals are coming off of a strong 2020-21 season which saw them go 17-7 overall and 14-3 in the Big Sky Conference, advancing all the way to the Big Sky Conference championship game.Â
