CHENEY, Wash. – Idaho dominated down the stretch to defeat Eastern Washington in five sets on Friday afternoon in Cheney. The Vandals dropped the first two, and looked down for the count in the fourth, but kept the pressure on for the come-from-behind victory.
Avery Housley led the Vandals with 19 kills and 17 digs.
Kennedy Warren added 14.
Travel Morris hit .583 with seven kills.
Things were close to start in the first set before a 9-1 run by EWU gave the Eagles control at 21-11. Idaho traded points the rest of the set, ultimately falling 25-15.
The second set was eerily similar. Idaho leveled the score at nine on a kill from
Delaney Nicoll but EWU responded with a 10-1 run to take command of the set. The Vandals made a late run but EWU would take the set, 25-19.
Idaho took control in the third. The Vandals got up 7-6 early and never looked back, keeping EWU to just one multi-point rally for the rest of the set. Idaho would cruise to the 25-17 set victory.
EWU came out hot to start the fourth and appeared to be cruising to the win before a furious Idaho rally. The Eagles led 24-15, but the Vandals scored the next nine points to level the score, then ultimately got the set win 27-25.
Idaho controlled the fifth set, trailing only once early. The Vandals would go on to win the set, 15-10, and take the match, 3-2.
It is the first time the Vandals have come back from a 2-0 set deficit since October of 2013 against Utah Valley.
The Vandals and Eagles return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m.
