Vandals Fall in Overtime

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho Vandals (0-4-0, 0-2-0 BSC) fell, 1-0, in overtime to Montana (3-0-0, 2-0-0 BSC) on Sunday afternoon. Following a scoreless 99 minutes, the Griz scored on a free kick in the final seconds of the first overtime period to win the game.

The Vandals started the match on the front foot, holding much of the possession and getting three shots off in the first 12 minutes, all by Myah Merino. Neither team was able to break through, and although Maddie Haas had a good chance blocked just before the halftime whistle, the two teams entered the break scoreless.

Idaho kept the momentum going in the second period. Kaysie Bruce and Merino had back-to-back shots blocked in the 50th minute. Merino had another two chances in quick succession in the 58th minute, but Idaho was unable to break the stalemate. In the last six minutes, Taylor Brust had two free kick shots that were headed for the back of the net before they were saved by Griz goalkeeper Claire Howard. Despite the Vandals outshooting UM, 9-0, in the second half, at the end of 90 minutes, Idaho and Montana remained knotted, 0-0.

The overtime period was end-to-end, with neither team able to get off a shot. In the 100th minute, a Vandal foul gave the Griz a free kick, which Rita Lang scored, just beating keeper Avrie Fox for a golden goal.

Idaho outshot Montana, 13-6, in the game, and had five shots on goal compared to two by the Griz. Merino had six shots to lead the Vandals, while Taylor Brust had two shots on goal, both off of free kicks. Idaho had three corner kicks, while UM had one. The Griz committed 16 fouls, while the Vandals had 13. Avrie Fox (0-4-0) took the loss for Idaho. She made one save in 100 minutes. Claire Howard (3-0-0) earned the win for Montana, making five saves.
