Mullan, Fiedler, Named Vandals of the Week

MOSCOW, Idaho – Henrike Fiedler of women's track and field and Sean Mullan from men's golf have been named this week's Vandals of the Week for their exceptional work in the classroom.

Fiedler just completed her junior season with the Idaho women's track team, competing in long jump. The Langenhangen, Germany native is pursuing a degree in anthropology.

"I want to earn my masters and focus on either pre-historic archeology or forensic anthropology," said Fiedler. "I'm not sure exactly what I want to do but I know I want to work in that field."

In 2019, Fiedler set a school record in the outdoor long jump which helped her finish in first place in the Big Sky Outdoor Championships for long jump. She also placed fifth in the 2019 Big Sky Indoor Championships in long jump. Fiedler is a two-time Big Sky All-Academic Honoree with a 4.0 cumulative GPA.

Mullan, originally from London, England is a graduate student working towards a master's degree in public administration. Mullan joined the Vandals for one season in 2021 and will finish his master's degree this summer.

"I was pretty fortunate," said Mullan. "The MPA program offered classes in the fall, spring and summer. I was able to plan accordingly to do it within three semesters. I took four classes in the fall without playing a season and five in the spring while playing a season, so that was a bit hectic. This summer I'm taking nine credits. I've just been trying to think of the bigger picture rather than 'I've got load of schoolwork to do'. It's been good, it's been tough, but it's been good."

Mullan earned All-Big Sky First Team for the 2021 season along with being named Big Sky Golfer of the Week once. He finished the season third-best on the team with a 73.52 per round average and earned the team's Senior Award. Mullan has been able to earn a 3.55 cumulative grade point average in graduate school.

As always, the recognition for the hard work in the classroom was greatly appreciated.

"In our mission statement it says the focus is not only on athletics but also in academics," said Fiedler. "I really like that we prioritize academics because it sometimes doesn't get as much recognition."

"It's nice because nobody really sees what you do behind the scenes,", said Mullan. "They only see you on the golf course or in athletics, or wining this and winning that. Nobody sees what goes on behind the scenes. I put in the work. Doing five classes while competing was full on, so it's just nice to have that recognition."
