SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Idaho Vandals (4-13, 3-5) fell in overtime in a back-and-forth affair to Sacramento State (7-9, 3-4) 76-73 Saturday afternoon.
The Vandals last second attempt to tie the game was just off the mark as the Sacramento State Hornets rallied from a late 10-point deficit to edge the Vandals in overtime.
Beyonce Bea scored a team-high 21 points and added six rebounds and five assists.
Sydney Gandy and
Tiana Johnson each scored 17 points and five rebounds for the Vandals, with Gandy adding eight assists.
The game featured 12 ties and seven lead changes. After trading baskets for the first20 minutes, Idaho went a mini run making four-straight field goals to jump out to a 9-point lead. Sacramento State then responded with three-straight from beyond the arc to tie the game. Idaho held a 3-point advantage heading into the fourth.
Idaho built a 10-point lead with 6:27 left in regulation, but three-straight trips to the free throw line allowed the Hornets to climb back into the game.
Sac state shot 17 of their 18 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Vandals were just 1 of 3 from the line.
The Hornets tied the game at 61 before back-to-back jumpers by Bea gave the Vandals a brief 65-61 with just over two minutes to go.
The Vandals would come up empty on their last two possessions and the game went into the extra period tied at 65.
The Vandals then had three empty possessions late in OT before Bea connected on a triple with 11 seconds left to cut the lead to two. The Hornets went one of two from the line setting up the Vandals with one last chance to tie the game, but they couldn't get a clean look and the shot was just off allowing the Hornets to escape with the win.
