CHENEY, Wash. – The Idaho cross country team is set for postseason action this weekend when the squad travels to Cheney for the 2022 Big Sky Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 28.
The Big Sky Conference Championships is being hosted by Eastern Washington at the Fairways Golf Course. The men's 8k competition gets underway at 10 a.m., while the women will begin the 5k race at 11 a.m.
The Vandals are back in action after delivering a pair of first-place team finishes at the LC State Invitational on Oct. 8. The women got things started, sweeping the top three spots and seven out of the first eight places to take home a team title with 17 points. Maya Kobylanski (16:35),
Kelsey Swenson (16:42) and
Nathalia Campos (17:11) went 1, 2, 3 to lead Idaho to victory. The men had similar success, claiming the top five spots in their race. Junior
Lorenz Herrmann led the charge with a first-place finish in 24:05.
The Vandal women were picked to finish second while the men were voted to finish fourth in the annual preseason poll. Last season, the women placed fourth overall, as they return their top-8 finishers from 2021, including Katja Pattis who finished 10th and took home All-Conference honors. Tim Stevens and the Vandal men placed fifth a season ago.
The men will be battling against a loaded field, taking on the No. 3 team in the nation in Northern Arizona and the No. 21 ranked Montana State Bobcats. The women's side features the No. 4 team in the nation in NAU and three teams ranked in the Mountain Region - Northern Arizona (No. 2), Montana State (No. 12) and Weber State (No. 13).
