McCoy Named Jerry Rice Award Finalist

MOSCOW, Idaho – University of Idaho freshman quarterback Gevani McCoy was named one of 25 Jerry Rice Award Finalists by Stats Perform, the organization announced today.
 
The award is given to the National Freshman of the year for the FCS subdivision.
 
McCoy, a redshirt freshman is one of five quarterbacks on the list. He is the only quarterback to lead his team to the FCS playoffs. He also has the most touchdowns passes among freshmen with 25 and is second with 2,376 yards despite missing the season finale at Idaho State.
 
He is first in completion percentage (68.0%) and in passer rating (168.4). He has only thrown five interceptions so far this season.
 
Of the 25 players on the list, only five are playing in the playoffs. Saint Francis WE Makai Jackson, UC Davis DB Rex Connors, William & Mary DV Jalen Jones and Montana punter Patrick Rohrback join McCoy in the postseason.
 
McCoy missed the regular-season finale against Idaho State but is expected to return to lineup against Southeastern Louisiana Saturday.
 
The Vandals face the Lions Saturday at 4 p.m. pacific at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond, La.
