Slovenian National Champion Distance Runner Signs with Vandals

MOSCOW, Idaho -- The University of Idaho Track & Field/Cross Country program is ecstatic to announce the signing of Sebastjan Bas to the class of 2023. Bas comes to Idaho from the town of Celje in Slovenia and will make an immediate impact for the Vandals.

Bas made a splash in the 2020 season prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the Slovenia under-18 National Championships in Novo Mest that February, Bas bested the field for the national title in what was then a personal best time.

From 2019 to 2021, Bas continued to better his marks from the 400 meters and 800 meters, and raced at the national championships showcasing his talent and signs of the amazing season yet to come. The 2022 season was record setting for Bas. He ran personal bests in the 400 meters, 600 meters, and 800 meters, showcasing his speed and strength.

He again won a national title in the 800 meters, this time outdoors at the Slovenian under-20 National Championships in Nova Gorica. He also broke the 1:20" mark in the 600m in September, finishing in 1:19.84". At the quarter mile distance, Bas broke the 50-second barrier three times this past season.

"We are thrilled to add Sebastjan to the Vandal family," Idaho Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Tim Cawley said. "He will help on the track as well as with his studies."
