Vandals Top Eastern Washington 79-72

Beyonce Bea notches fifth double-double of the season

MOSCOW, Idaho – Beyonce Bea recorded her fifth double-double of the year scoring 26 points and pulling down 11 rebounds and Ashlyn Wallace added 14 points off the bench as the Idaho Vandals (7-16, 6-8) used a strong second half to defeat the Eastern Washington Eagles (7-18, 5-11) 79-72 Saturday afternoon at ICCU Arena.

Bea was 9-20 from the floor and a perfect 7 of 7 from the free-throw line as she notched her second consecutive double-double.

The Vandals and Eagles were engaged in another tight back-and-forth contest that saw 12 lead changes and three ties.

EWU led 19-15 after the first quarter, in which the Vandals only shot 26.3 percent from the field. Wallace hit a triple at the 4:13 mark of the second quarter to give Idaho their first lead in over ten minutes of play. The lead was short-lived as Eastern Washington closed the half on a 10-6 run to hold a 35-32 halftime advantage.

"We talked extensively about energy in the second half and playing a hard 20 minutes defensively," head coach Jon Newlee said. "I didn't like the way we came out early and I thought we needed to pick it up. In the third quarter, we really turned it around."

The Vandals committed only two turnovers in the second half. Idaho held EWU to just 1 of 11 from 3-point range and 35.2 percent shoot from the field overall.

The Vandals shot 45.5 percent in the second half as they outscored the Eagles 21-13 in the third quarter to hold a five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Wallace then scored nine points in the opening two minutes to help the Vandals open up an 11-point lead. Eastern Washington tried to chip away at the lead, but the Vandals had an answer for every push EWU tried to make down the stretch.

Sydney Gandy finished with seven points and seven assists, while Kirby pulled down seven rebounds. Tiana Johnson added 10 points and five rebounds.

The Vandals will have a quick turnaround as they host Montana on Monday, Feb. 2. Tip-off from ICCU Arena is set for 2 p.m.
