MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho Vandals (11-16, 10-8) pulled away in the fourth quarter to win their fifth in a row by topping Portland State (5-21, 0-18) 64-39 Monday Night at ICCU Arena.
The Vandals used a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring Portland State 25-11, to cruise to a 25-point win.
Both teams had trouble getting shots to fall in the first quarter. The Vandals made just four field goals, shooting 28 percent from the field. Sydney Gandy kept Idaho afloat, scoring nine of her 14 points in the opening quarter.
While the Vandal offense still wasn't at full stride in the second quarter. The defense clamped down on Portland State holding the Vikings to 2 of 19 shooting for just four points to hold a 27-19 halftime advantage.
The Vandals held the Vikings to just nine points in the third quarter to extend their lead to 11. Portland State shot just 29 percent for the game and were held to a season-low 39 points. The Vikings were just 1 of 17 from 3-point range.
Louise Forsyth and Beyonce Bea each scored nine points in the fourth as the offense started to click. Idaho shot 55.6 percent in the final quarter to pull away with the big win.
Forsyth led the team with 15 points, and she added six rebounds. Bea recorded her seventh double-double of the season by pulling down a season-high 14 rebounds and scoring 11 points.
Tiana Johnson grabbed 12 rebounds as the Vandals out-rebounds the Vikings 49-37.
With the win, the Vandals move into a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference and a first-round bye in the Big Sky Tournament.
The same two teams will meet up again on Wednesday, March, 2 in Portland, Ore. Opening tip is set for 6 p.m.
