MOSCOW, Idaho - Idaho men's tennis fell short on the final day of the Arizona State spring break tournament, falling to Michigan State 4-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Vandals opened doubles play in dominant fashion, claiming a 1-0 lead over the Spartans after No. 1 and No. 2 positions were victorious. Duo
Francisco Bascon and
Bruno Casino won 6-3 over Nick Williams and Jack Winkler while
Francisco Gay and
Mario Duron Garza defeated Jarreau Campbell and Kazuki Matsuno, 6-4.
Idaho was unable to carry its momentum over to singles action as the Spartans claimed four out of five victories.
Alex Asenov dropped his match in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) at No. 6 singles and was followed by a 6-2, 6-4 loss by Casino at the No. 2 position. Michigan State grabbed its third straight win over Duron, 7-5, 6-3 to push their lead to 3-1.
Matteo Masala became the lone victor for Idaho at No. 3 singles, defeating Graydon Lair, 6-2, 6-4. Carson Gates of Michigan State closed out the match, with a 7-5, 6-1 win over
Vivek Ramesh.
Gay split his first two sets at No. 1 before his third set was called off due to MSU's match win.
