Men’s Hoops Signs Three Newcomers

Vandal men’s basketball adds two transfers and one incoming freshman

MOSCOW, Idaho – University of Idaho head coach Zac Claus announced the addition of three talented signees on Friday, as transfers Terren Frank, Trey Smith, and freshman Mikhail Abdul-Hamid join the Vandal men's basketball program for the 2022-23 season.

Terren Frank | 6-8 (225) | Forward | Vanderbilt University (Los Angeles, Calif.)

Frank comes to Idaho as a third-year sophomore after spending one season each at Texas Christian University and Vanderbilt University. The 6-8, 225-pound forward appeared in 43 total games, compiling 88 points, 61 rebounds and 11 assists. As a sophomore at Vanderbilt, he played a significant role in a game against Temple, delivering five points, six rebounds and three steals in 32 minutes of action. Frank's lone season at TCU was highlighted by an eight-point, four-rebound, one steal and one block performance in a win over Big 12 foe Iowa State. 

Frank graduated from Sierra Canyon High School (Chatsworth, Calif.) in the spring of 2020, where he helped lead the Trailblazers to an 89-11 overall record and two open division state championships over his final three seasons. Sierra Canyon was not only the best team in the state of California during Frank's junior and senior seasons, but the Trailblazers also ranked as the No. 1 high school boys basketball team in the country in 2018-19 and No. 2 nationally in 2019-2020 (MaxPreps). Frank was named a 4-star recruit and the 92nd best player in the 2020 recruiting class by ESPN. 

Frank's father, Tellis was an NBA first-round draft pick in 1987, being selected 14th overall by the Golden State Warriors. Tellis played five years in the NBA and an additional seven years overseas. His mother Melanie and father Tellis reside in Sherman Oaks, California. 

Mikhail Abdul-Hamid | 6-5 (190) | Guard | Christian Brothers College High School (St. Louis, Mo.)

Abdul-Hamid is a 6-5, 190-pound wing from St. Louis, Mo. He played three seasons at Christian Brothers College High School (CBC), where he helped the Cadets to a 62-19 overall record, including a 26-6 mark in 2021-22 and a Missouri Class 6A state championship. Abdul-Hamid was the fourth leading scorer on a team that featured two-division l signees and a top-25 national recruit in the 2024 class.
 
Abdul-Hamid averaged 12.4 points per game and 4.5 rebounds in the 2022 Under Armor circuit, playing with club team, Fundamentals U. The sharpshooter shot 25-of-56 (44.6 percent) from behind the three-point line in eight games.  

His dad, Stephen played college basketball at Wichita State and New Mexico State, and was a former head varsity basketball coach at Crossroad's College Prep School in St. Louis. Abdul-Hamid's brother Mustafa played at UCLA from 2006-2010 and went on to play four years of professional basketball internationally following his college career.

Trey Smith | 6-3 (195) | Guard | San Jose State University (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.)

Smith joins the Vandal basketball program as a fifth-year senior from San Jose State University. The 6-3, 195-pound guard played four seasons for the Spartans, appearing in 86 total games and starting in 22 contests in 2021-22. He averaged 8.4 points, two rebounds, 1.6 assists and 31.4 minutes combined over his junior and senior seasons at SJSU. As a senior, Smith scored in double figures nine times, including a career-high 24-point performance and 8 for 14 mark from three in a win over Portland. His eight three-point makes tied an SJSU singles-game record. 

The two-way guard was one of the best in the country at taking care of the basketball and guarding without fouling. According to KenPom, Smith ranked third (2020-21) and fifth (2021-22) nationally in fewest fouls committed per 40 minutes. He also held the fifth and sixth lowest turnover rate in the nation during that time. He holds a 2.8 career assist to turnover ratio.  

Smith graduated from Saddleback Valley Christian High School as the single-season school record holder for points scored in a season (831), an All-CIF selection and All-Orange County choice. He averaged 27.5 points in his senior year. 

The computer science major was also selected to the Academic All-Mountain West team in 2019 and 2020.

Frank, Abdul-Hamid and Smith, combined with signees Nigel Burris (San Francisco, Calif.), Dominique Ford (Las Vegas, Nev.), Divant'e Moffitt (Spanaway, Wash.) and Titus Yearout (Lapawai, Idaho), give Idaho seven total newcomers for the 2022-23 basketball season.
