Vandal Women Finish the Weekend with 68-61 Win at Idaho State

MOSCOW, Idaho – Ashlyn Wallace had a standout game, putting up a career-high of 25 points against the Bengals and Sydney Gandy notched a career-high eight rebounds. Three other Vandals tallied points in the double digits en route to today's win in Pocatello.

The Vandals started strong with a commanding 25-17 at the end of the first quarter. Wallace led the Vandals with 11 points, tying her season high in just the first 10 minutes, shooting 3-3 from the field, two of which were from the arc and 3-4 from the line. Both teams fought back and forth, exchanging the lead until the Vandals went on an 8-0 run against the Bengals at the end of the quarter. Sydney Gandy was a force defensively, leading the Vandals with three rebounds.

Idaho continued to score unanswered points in the second quarter, extending it to 11 until Idaho State got back on the board. Rosa Smith and Wallace dictated the tempo of the second quarter as they went on another run of seven points. Wallace finished the half with 19 points, knocking down her previous career high. Smith contributed seven points to the tally as the Vandals entered the locker room with a 40-28 lead.

The Vandal defense held ISU's highest scorer to only eight points in the first half as the Bengals shot 28.2% (11-39) from the field, 3-13 on three-point attempts, and 60% (3-5) from the line. Idaho was on fire, shooting 48% (12-25) from the field and 50% (8-16) from the arc.

Idaho continued to punish the Bengals in the third quarter, reaching the highest lead of 18 points (50-32). Tiana Johnson was a force in the quarter, notching five points in addition to Wallace with six. The Vandals continued to have offensive success shooting 40% from the field and 44.4% from deep. ISU fought back as Idaho was able to outscore them by only two points (16-14).

With a comfortable 56-42 lead at the beginning of the final quarter, Idaho stepped off the gas on both sides of the court allowing the Bengals to threaten the win. ISU brought the game within four points after a three-minute dry spell from the Vandals. Beyonce Bea had an unusually quiet game due to being in foul trouble, but she showed up in the final 10 and helped push the Vandals to the finish with six points in the quarter. Two Bengals fouled out as the final minutes ticked down and the Vandals held on to earn their second win of the weekend.

Idaho is now 4-6 in Big Sky and 8-13 overall after the Vandals snapped the three-game losing streak to the Bengals. Idaho State is now 3-6 in the conference and 8-12 overall.

The Vandals return home next weekend to face Portland State (2/2) and Sacramento State (2/4).
