Idaho Falls Short in 76-73 Loss to CSUN

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho basketball team (0-2) opened its 2023-24 home schedule with a hard-fought 76-73 loss to Cal State Northridge (1-1) on Thursday night inside ICCU Arena.

Four Vandals scored in double figures, including a team-high 18 points from Terren Frank. The Los Angeles native delivered in his first game back at the ICCU Arena in almost a year, knocking down seven shots, grabbing a team-high six rebounds and tallying three steals.

D'Angelo Minnis also stood out for the Idaho offense, posting 15 points, five assists and two steals. Tyler Mrus added 14 points on a 5 for 6 clip while Julius Mims recorded 12 points in each of their home debuts.

The Vandals jumped out front right from the tip as Mims caught an alley-oop pass from Quinn Denker to get on the board. The highlight reel play carried over to a fast start for Idaho as they built a 14-6 lead in the opening six minutes of action.

Idaho saw its largest lead of the game come on the next play, as Minnis produced the steal and followed it up on the other end with a three-point bucket to give the Vandals an 11-point lead (17-6).

The Matadors responded with a run of their own, scoring the next 12 points to gain an 18-17 advantage with 8:40 left to play in the half. Minnis stopped the Matador spurt with his second three of the game to put Idaho up 20-18. The Vandals held onto the lead until the 1:42 mark before CSUN would go out front for the remainder of the half (38-36).

The first 20 minutes of action saw Idaho shoot 13 for 31 from the field, 6-of-13 from behind the three-point line and 4 for 4 at the charity stripe.

Idaho delivered another strong start to the half, opening with back-to-back three-pointers from Mrus in less than a minute of action to build a four-point advantage (42-38). The Bothell, Wash. native looked to be finding his rhythm, knocking down his third and fourth made three before being sidelined due to injury.

The Vandals rallied behind their teammate, building a seven-point lead with under eight minutes left to go. The momentum was built by a pair of steals by Mims and Minnis, and back-to-back layups from Frank to go up 66-59.

CSUN tied up the game (66-66) with just over four minutes to go. The Matadors scored six of the next eight points, including a step-back three from Dionte Bostick to make it 72-68.

Idaho responded with two consecutive buckets to go back on top, 73-72. Mims knocked down a floater in the lane and Kyson Rose made his first three-pointer of the game to give the Vandals hope.

CSUN grabbed a crucial offensive rebound, forced an Idaho turnover and drew late contact that led to winning the game at the foul line, 76-73.

Despite Idaho being outrebounded by 13 (43-30) and turning the ball over 16 times, the Vandals dished out 17 assists and secured 12 steals in the effort.

Idaho shot 46.7 percent from the field and knocked down 11 threes on a 42 percent clip.
