Historic Vandal Football Season Draws to a Close

MOSCOW, IDAHO - Idaho's historic 2023 season ended Saturday evening, falling to UAlbany 30-22 at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome, in the FCS Quarterfinals.

The Vandals finished the year with the first postseason win and the first nine-win season since 2016 and the first trip to the quarterfinals since 1993, all with the youngest team among the eight teams in the quarterfinals and with four of the six rotational players on the offensive line that were first or second-year players.

Idaho led most of the game, taking a 7-0 lead on a 36-yard reception by Jordan Dwyer. Albany tied the game up on the ensuing possession, but the Vandals added a field goal at the end of the first quarter to regain the lead.

The Vandals extended the lead to 16-7 on an Anthony Woods touchdown with 9:21 to play in the second, but again UAlbany answered to cut the lead to 16-14 at the half.

The two teams traded field goals, before the Great Danes took the lead with 4:38 to play.

Idaho drove the ball to midfield before the vaunted UAlbany defense recorded their first sack, a strip sack with just over two minutes to play. The Danes added a touchdown, before Idaho responded with a made field goal before attempting an onside kick with 25 seconds left. The attempt was unsuccessful.

Woods carried the ball 16 times for 105 yards and a touchdown. Woods closed the season with 1,155 yards, 10th on the Idaho single-season record list. He also closed the year, tied with Joel Thomas' 1998 season rushing touchdown mark for fourth on the single-season mark with 16.

Hayden Hatten caught 12 passes for 135 yards, pushing his single-season total to 1,231, surpassing his 2022 total and giving him 3,449 career yards. He moved into second-place all-time on the career receiving yards list, passing Jerry Hendren's 3,435 yards. He holds every Idaho receiving touchdown record.

Jermaine Jackson closed his career with three games of outstanding return production. He had three punt returns for 81 yards, including a 73-yarder. He also had a kickoff return for 55 yards. He added 66 receiving yards and finished the game with 202 all-purpose yards.

On the defensive side, Tre Thomas tallied a career-best 12 tackles, including two tackles for loss.

Idaho racked up 424 yards of offense, but gave up an uncharacteristic 461, including 341 through the air.

Idaho closes the season with a 9-4 record.
