MOSCOW, Idaho – The Vandal track and field squad rounded out their last weekend of competition with two new school records from
Kelsey Swenson and
Lorenz Herrmann in addition to several top-three finishes and personal bests.
Record Breakers
Swenson set the new record with a time of 16:21.44 in the women's 5,000-meter run. She beat a 41-year-old record previously held by Patsy Sharples in 1982 (16:23.80). Swenson's time ranks sixth in the conference, less than a minute behind the leader.
Herrmann joined Swenson a day later with a time of 1:47.39 in the men's 800-meter run. He beat his previous record time of 1:48.07 less than a month later. Herrmann's time ranks first in the conference with teammate
Zac Bright right behind him at 1:49.85 (personal best).
Head Coach Cawley remarked on the two records exclaiming, "We're so excited to break two school records. We're so proud of Kelsey for breaking that record and super proud of Lorenz as well. He is just having an amazing season. Coach Travis is doing a great job with those guys. It was a weekend where our team put things together."
Husky Classic
Katja Pattis,
Shea Mattson, and
Tim Stevens joined Swenson and Herrmann in Seattle for the Husky Classic. Pattis finished the mile with a personal best time of 4:46.71 and is currently ranked seventh in the conference.
Mattson and Stevens competed in the mile for the men's side. Stevens ran a personal best time of 4:09.85 and is ranked 18th in the conference. Mattson's mark (4:08.74) from the WSU Open last weekend has him placed 16th in the conference.
Don Kirby Elite Invite
Mia Sylvester picked up a personal best in the women's weight throw in Albuquerque this weekend. The freshman threw for a distance of 15.73m placing 36th among the best throwers in the nation. Her mark ranks 14th in the conference. She is also currently ranked first in the conference with her mark (14.85m) from the WSU Open in the shot put.
Mika Brouwer ran a personal best time of 21.42s in the final of the men's 200-meter dash. He placed 16th in the event and the time ranks second in the conference.
Zachary Nunis earned the highest finish for the Vandals at the Don Kirby Elite Invite in the long jump. He placed fourth with a season-best distance of 7.56m. The mark ranks third in the conference, only .28 meters behind the leader. Nunis is also ranked top-10 in the conference for the triple jump with a mark of 15.14 from the Cougar Classic at the beginning of the year.
Whitworth Invitational
The majority of the Vandal track and field team was in Spokane for the two-day Whitworth Invitational this weekend with 23 Vandals placing in the top-five spots.
Olivia Martin earned second place in the women's 60-meter dash with a personal best time of 7.59s. The mark has her ranked fifth in the Big Sky, two places behind teammate
Camryn Crouch. On the men's side,
Jurrian Hering finished fourth with a time of 6.93s. His mark of 6.87s from the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open has him ranked fifth in the Big Sky in the 60m.
Hering climbed up the podium in his second event, the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in first place. He ran a season-best time of 8.08s. He was joined by
Deyondre Davis in fourth with a time of 8.30s and
Landon Peterson in sixth with a season-best time of 8.44s.
Martin followed Hering and earned a first-place finish in the women's 200-meter dash. She ran another personal best time of 24.58s. Her time is ranked seventh in the conference.
Prabhasha Wickramaraachchi was right behind Martin in fourth place with a personal best time of 25.19s, ranked 16th in the conference.
Spencer Barrera holds the third-best time in the conference after running a personal best time of 21.53s in the 200-meter dash. Davis was right behind Barrera in the race, placing sixth with a time of 22.11s.
Franziska Stoehr and
Alex Ayers placed top-five for the men and women in the 400m. Stoehr placed second with a time of 57.66s while Ayers placed fourth with a time of 48.52s. Stoehr ranks 12th in the conference and Ayers is ranked fifth.
Gage Zanette ran a personal best time of 1:53.14 in the men's 800m to earn first place. On the women's side,
Leah Holmgren ran a season-best time of 2:14.34 for second followed by a personal best of 2:14.43 by
Hannah Russell for third. Zanette ranks ninth in the conference while Holmgren sits at 10th and Russell at 11th.
Nathalia Campos ran a personal best time of 10:01.41 in the women's 3,000 meters for the first-place spot.
Cruz Flores,
Sam Fulbright,
Zac Knapp, and
Gabriel Dinnel all finished top-five in the 5,000-meter run for the men in addition to
Abigail Thomas and
Andrea Cernuda Herraiz for the women. Flores earned first with a time of 14:49.93 followed by Fulbright in second (14:51.70), Knapp in third (14:55.87), and Dinnel in fourth with a season-best (14:58.57). Thomas placed first with a time of 17:52.19 followed by Cernuda in fourth with a time of 18:27.27.
In the field,
Katja Davidowske earned a third-place finish in the women's high jump. She jumped for a personal best height of 1.62m. In the triple jump,
Kalani Hardyway earned second place, joined by
Ellie Grant in third and
Amanda Munoz in fifth. Hardyway jumped for a distance of 11.24m, Grant earned a mark of 11.13m and Munoz reached 11.06m.
The men's 4x400 relay team of
Evan Henkel,
Ethan Sturdivant,
Luca Wagner, and
Gage Zanette rounded out the weekend with a fifth-place finish. The relay team ran a time of 3:23.55.
Coach Cawley reflected on the weekend saying, "We had a ton of really good performances, and we have many that are so close to putting it together. Everything is starting to come together at the right time. I'm really excited to see how conference goes especially with hosting it." The Vandals will take next weekend off in preparation for hosting the Big Sky Indoor Championships on February 23rd-25th.
