Track and Field Wrap Up WSU Open, Earn Many New Personal Bests

SPOKANE, Wash. – Idaho track and field had a weekend full of personal bests at the Washington State Open at The Podium in Spokane. Zac Bright, Katja Pattis, and Noah Culbertson earned spots on the podium in their respective events against a very talented field of athletes.

The competition was stiff as the Vandals faced Pac-12 schools such as Arizona State, California, Colorado State, and UCLA in addition to Big Sky conference members.

The two-day event kicked off on Friday with the women's weight throw. Freshman, Mia Sylvester threw for a personal best distance of 15.66m. Lily Phenicie also recorded a personal best in the event with a mark of 13.15m. Joseph Ruddell rounded out the field events with a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a height of 2.03m. Friday concluded with a third-place finish by Zac Bright in the men's 800m with a time of 1:52.19.

While there may not have been many top-three finishes, the competition produced many personal bests on Saturday. Camryn Crouch started the Vandals' success with a fourth-place finish in the women's 60m dash. She ran a personal best time of 7.52s. Katja Pattis followed Crouch's example and placed second in the mile with a personal best time of 4:48.83. Pattis shed more than seven seconds off her previous record. On the men's side, Shea Mattson also ran a personal best in the mile with a time of 4:08.74, placing in sixth place. Prabhasha Wickramaraachchi earned a sixth-place finish with a personal best time of 56.31s in the 400m dash.

In the field, Sylvester threw for another personal best distance, this time in the shot put. She placed fourth with a distance of 14.85m. Zachary Nunis earned fourth place with a distance of 15.10m in the men's triple jump. Noah Culbertson closed up the field events with a third-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 17.18m.

The Vandals concluded the meet with a fourth-place finish in the women's 4x400 relay. The team of Olivia Martin, Crouch, Wickramaraachchi, and Franziska Stoehr ran for a time of 3:49.31.

Idaho will split next weekend between the Whitworth Invite in Spokane and the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque as they prepare to host the Big Sky Indoor Championships on February 23rd – 25th.
