EL PASO, Texas – The Vandals (5-2-1) closed out non-conference play with a 1-0 win at the University of Texas at El Paso (1-7-1) on Thursday night. With the shutout, Kira Witte became the all-time leader at Idaho with 16 career shutouts.
In just 26 games, Witte earned the No. 1 spot previously held by Liz Boyle who earned the feat in four seasons. This season, Witte has faced 103 shots, saving 27 for a save percentage of 0.794. She has only allowed seven goals in eight games for a goals-against average of 0.88.
Kylie Hummel was the difference maker for the Vandals, scoring the game-winner in the 78th minute. Hummel leads the team with two game-winners on the season. Hummel has three game-winners in her career, only one away from being tied for fifth all-time at Idaho.
Hummel's goal originated from Alyssa Peters in the left-hand corner. Peters stepped up to take the corner kick and sent the ball flying into the back post. The ball bounced through a scramble of players to the feet of Maya Hamilton. Hamilton redirected the ball back toward the goal where Hummel was waiting on UTEP's backline. Hummel jumped into the air and headed the ball past the Miner's keeper.
Peters tied her career-high of five assists in a season with her involvement in Hummel's goal tonight. Peters is now tied for fifth all-time with Jill Flockhart (2009-12). Before this weekend, she was ranked 29th in the NCAA with four assists.
The Vandals were limited to only one shot in the first half but came back and rallied off 10 in the second half. The Miners led with 13 total shots, with most coming from distance. While the Miners out-shot the Vandals, the Vandals had the edge in accuracy sending six toward goal while UTEP only had three.
The Vandals transition into conference play next week as they host Weber State on Wednesday, September 20th at 7:00 p.m. in the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.
