CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah swept the Vandals, 20-25, 16-25, 19-25, on Saturday afternoon at the American First Event Center.
Taryn Vrieling had 10 kills on a .261 hitting percentage to lead Idaho. Setter
Keelyn Muell posted 20 or more assists for the third match in a row with 21 assists and eight digs in the match.
Southern Utah started with a first set victory, 25-20. The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 7-3 to start and the Vandals were unable to claw back to get within striking distance. Vrieling led the way with three of the Vandals' 12 kills but six attack errors helped SUU earn a first set win.
Idaho fell in the second 25-16, falling down 2-0. The Vandal posted 11 kills but were unable to get it going efficiently on the attack as Idaho hit .059. SUU protected the net with seven blocks in the set.
Southern Utah completed the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third. The Thunderbirds built a 6-2 lead before the Vandals battled back to make it 10-10. SUU used a 6-1 run to create separation and Idaho was never able to come back.
The Vandals return home to begin Big Sky Conference play, as they welcome the Montana State Bobcats to Memorial Gym on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m.
