Vandal Volleyball Travels to Face Weber State, Idaho State

MOSCOW, Idaho - The Vandal volleyball team continues its three-match road stretch this week with a trip to face Weber State (Sept. 28) and in-state rival Idaho State (Sept. 30).

Thursday's match is set for 5 PM PT at Swenson Gym against fourth-place Weber State. Idaho closes the road trip at Reed Gym for a 12 PM PT rivalry match at Idaho State.

ABOUT IDAHO
  • Idaho kicked off conference play last week with a home loss to Montana State and a straight-set defeat on the road at Northern Arizona. 
  • Taryn Vrieling leads on the attack for the Vandals posting team highs in kills (107), points per set (2.81), kills per set (2.49) and aces (12). 
  • Vrieling owns two double-doubles on the season, including a 14-kill and 12-dig effort at Utah Tech in the final preseason tournament of the season. 
  • Middle blocker Renata Lopez Morales leads the team on defense with 33 blocks and a .70 block per set average. She tallied her first double-double of the season with an 11 dig and career-high 11 block effort at Gonzaga earlier in the season. 
  • Libero Aine Doty has recorded double-digit digs in 11 out of 13 matches, including a career-high of 35 against Western Illinois. She is averaging a Big Sky-best 4.86 digs per set and places third with 204 total digs.
  • Second-year head coach Chris Gonzalez guided the Vandals to a straight-set sweep over UC Riverside on Aug. 27 in the season's opening tournament at the Vandal Volleyball Invitational.
  • The 2023 season marks the 50th year of Idaho volleyball.

SCOUTING WEBER STATE
  • The Wildcats enter the week 8-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play after splitting a pair of contests last week against Montana (3-1) and Sacramento State (2-3). Weber State is 4-3 at home and earned two consecutive wins in Ogden.  
  • Weber is led by setter Kate Standifird, who leads the Big Sky with 523 assists and 10.3 assists per set. Dani Richins and Baylee Bodily lead on the attack, as Richins posts 168 kills and Bodily owns 140. Defensively, Kate Standifird posts a Big Sky best 1.33 blocks per set. 
  • UI leads the series 25-18, but Weber has won four of the last five matchups.

SCOUTING IDAHO STATE
  • The Bengals hold a 2-11 overall mark and 0-2 record in conference play. ISU dropped a pair of matches against Portland State (1-3) and Montana State (0-3) last week. 
  • Outside hitter Jamie Streit carries the most kills on the team with 135 while Sadie Bluth ranks second with 116. Defensively, Libero Lily Liekweg has recorded a team-best 145 digs on the season while blockers Jaydin Watts and Meline Robarge lead at the net with 30 and 28 blocks, respectively.   
  • The Bengals own a 25-24 overall record against the Vandals. ISU has won 3 of the last five matchups.

UP NEXT: Idaho returns home next week for a pair of matches against Sacramento State (Oct. 5) and Portland State (Oct. 7) inside Memorial Gym.
