MOSCOW, Idaho - The Idaho Men's and Women's Track and Field teams open up the 2024 indoor season at The Podium in Spokane, Wash. for the Spokane Sports Showcase (Jan. 12) and the Spokane Indoor Challenge (Jan. 12-13).
Action gets underway Friday morning with track and field events at 10 am for the Spokane Sports Showcase. The Spokane Indoor Challenge kicks off Friday evening at 7 pm with both track and field events. The competition continues all day Saturday with track and field beginning at 10 AM for the final day of the Spokane Indoor Challenge.
Six-time Big Sky Champion
Lorenz Herrmann hopes to collect even more hardware for the Vandals in 2024. The senior from Germany earned two first-place finishes in the 800m and 4x400m relay at last year's Big Sky Championships at the Vandals' home track in the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.
The first-place 4x400m relay team returns three of its four athletes,
Spencer Barrera and
Deyondre Davis along with Herrmann. Barrera, now a senior, also took home a solo title winning the 400m with a personal best, 47.04.
In the field,
Joseph Ruddell took home gold in the high jump with a mark of 2.12m. Ruddell returns for the Vandals as a senior in 2024.
The reigning Big Sky Freshman of the Year,
Mia Sylvester, looks to defend her title as the shot put champion with her personal record of 15.75m.
After their third-place finish at last year's Big Sky Championships,
Olivia Martin,
Belen Garcia Arias,
Franziska Stoehr, and
Prabhasha Wickramaraachchi all return chasing gold this year.
The meets are the first of eight regular season events for the Vandals before the Big Sky Championships Feb. 22-24. The Championships will be hosted by Eastern Washington at The Podium in Spokane, Wash. where the Vandals are set to compete for six of their meets this season.
