MOSCOW, Idaho - Idaho Track and Field has announced its next signee for the 2024 class in sprinter and jumper Mara Fuerniss. Hailing from Karlsruhe, Germany, Fuerniss is a top-ten German long jumper and three-time Baden-Württemberg state champion.
Fuerniss attended Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium in Gifhorn, Lower Saxony, Germany where she was honored as the school's No. 1 graduate in the 2023 class. Idaho's six-time Big Sky Champion,
Lorenz Herrmann of Landau, Germany also attended Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium.
Her 2023 season was highlighted with an eighth place finish in the long jump (5.63m) and eighth in the women's 4x100m (47.63) at the German U20 Championships at Leichtathletik Stadion, Rostock. Fuerniss also earned two Baden championship titles in the women's long jump and the 4x100m race. At the 2023 Baden-Württemberg championships, Fuerniss won the women's U20 long jump at a 5.48m mark.
At the 2022 Brixia Meeting, an interstate meet between Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland, Fuerniss finished third in the women's long jump. A month prior, Fuerniss took home two U18 Baden-Württemberg state titles in the women's long jump and 4x100m race.
"It's an awesome track team with super committed and patient coaches. In addition, the university has excellent academics and research opportunities," said Fuerniss of Idaho.
She plans to study biology with hopes of completing research at the University of Idaho.
