WBB Take the Road to Face Weber State and Idaho State

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Vandal women's basketball team hits the road to take on Weber State and Idaho State on Thursday and Saturday. The games will be broadcast on ESPN+. As always, the games will also be broadcast on the radio at AM 840 KMAX or GoVandals.com.

ABOUT IDAHO: The Vandals (11-12, 4-7) fell to Eastern Washington, 62-52 on Saturday afternoon at Reese Court. Sarah Schmitt led the court with a season-high 16 points on the day, going 4-4 from the free throw line.

Hopes were high in the first quarter as the Vandals went basket for basket with the Eagles. Last time out, the Vandals only scored eight points in the first 10 minutes but this time they were only down one, 14-15.

Down 12 at the start of the final quarter, Idaho fought to cut the deficit with a three-pointer from Sarah Brans, her second of the day. The Vandals were given ample opportunities to score, possessing the ball for over a minute through missed three-point attempts and offensive rebounds.

Eastern went scoreless for over two minutes, but the Vandals did not capitalize as they lost steam in the final minutes. Idaho had no luck as their shots rolled around the rim and refused to fall in. The Vandal energy faltered, and Eastern walked away with the win.

ABOUT WEBER STATE: The Wildcats (7-18, 4-8) currently sit in eighth place in the Big Sky. The Wildcats started with their first seven games on the road but then won three straight games with wins over Nevada, Utah Tech, and Westminster. The Wildcats are coming off a win over Portland State (67-46) and a loss to the Sacramento State Hornets, 44-75.

Weber State has been led by senior Daryn Hickok. She is 8th in the Big Sky at 12.6 points per game and has scored in double figures in sixteen games for the Wildcats. Hickok leads the team in scoring, free throws, and steals. Hickok was named to the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference team and earned All-Big Sky honors last year. She has played in 128 games in five seasons at Weber State and ranks fourth in career scoring.

ABOUT IDAHO STATE: The Bengals (10-13, 6-6) are fifth place currently in the Big Sky. Idaho State lost their first two games of the season on the road but quickly turned the tide with three consecutive wins, two on their home court and one on the road. The Bengals finished the weekend winless with losses to Sacramento State (58-61) and Portland State (53-59).

Idaho State's offense has been led by juniors, Maria Dias and Tasia Jordan. Both players have broken 200 points this season and average double-digit scoring per game. Kacey Spink leads her team with over 150 rebounds and nearly 70 assists.

SERIES HISTORY: Before the last time out, Idaho had a 10-game win streak against the Wildcats dating back to 2019. The Wildcats snapped that streak on Jan. 10, 2024, with a 61-56 win at the ICCU Arena. Jadyn Matthews led the court with 19 points followed by Kennedy Johnson with 18 points. All-time, the Vandals are 32-22 against Weber State. Last season, Idaho won both games, 66-52 and 77-52.

The history between the Vandals and Bengals dates back to 1976. The overall record between the two teams is in the Vandal's favor, 36-17. The University of Idaho started the record with 10 consecutive wins giving up a loss at Idaho State, then back to a seven-game winning streak. Since the 1990's, the teams have traded wins and losses but in the most recent matchup between the home-state rivals, the Vandals fell to the Bengals, 56-61.
