Vandals WBB Win Big on Senior Night

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho women's basketball team wrapped up their regular season with a 60-44 win over Portland State on Monday night in the ICCU Arena. Idaho finished the regular season 15-15 overall and 8-10 in conference play.

Kennedy Johnson led the team with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. With her first double double of her career, Johnson became the second Vandal to record one this season, preceded by Hope Butera with three (last on 12/28 vs Sacramento State). Skylar Bea grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, five of which were on the offensive side helping the Vandals to nine second-chance points.

The game started with points on the board for Idaho thanks to a jumper made by Sarah Brans. Idaho's defense was able to keep Portland State scoreless for over two minutes until they snuck through the key and tied up the game, 9-9. Portland State took the lead for the first time four minutes into the quarter but their reign was short-lived and Idaho was back with the lead thirty seconds later. Ashlyn Wallace sunk a three for the Vandals to put Idaho ahead, 16-12. After a few down-and-backs, Bea got a jumper off in the last second cushioning the lead.

Entering the second quarter, Portland State was in a scoring drought for over four minutes carrying over from the previous period. Within the first few minutes of the game, Idaho forced a shot clock violation for the Vikings and went on a 7-0 scoring run. Wallace and Brans each sunk a three, and Asha Phillips slid in for a backdoor layup to deepen the lead. Idaho was up at the half, 32-25.

Idaho's defense once again kept the Vikings scoreless for the first two minutes of the half. Idaho's offense had its moment to shine, with a 10-2 run including two back-to-back threes from Brans, and a knockdown three-pointer from Wallace. Idaho had 30 rebounds at the end of the third to Portland State's 19. 19 was also the number of points scored by the Vandals in the third quarter while the Vikings were only able to get off nine points in the period.

The final quarter was off to an energized start due to a stolen ball by Sarah Schmitt in the first 10 seconds, leading to a made jumper by Bea. Idaho put up 16 shots in the paint, contributing to the Vandals going 40% (22-55) from the field. Portland State ended the game with 29 rebounds while Idaho had 37. As the clock ticked down, the Vandals managed possessions for the maximum amount of time sealing the senior night win and the No. 6 seed in the Big Sky Tournament.
