Idaho Defense Shines, Peters Scores Go-Ahead Goal to Lift Idaho over Sac State

MOSCOW, Idaho – Alyssa Peters scored the go-ahead goal and the Vandal defense posted their fourth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Sacramento State in the Big Sky opener on Friday night inside the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.

For the second consecutive game, Idaho jumped out to a quick lead in the opening 10 minutes of action. After a handball by the Sac State defender in the final third, Peters set up the free kick and lasered it between the opposition to record her first goal of the season and put the Vandals up 1-0.

Idaho continued to press on the offensive end for the remainder of the half while the defense held their own. The Vandals recorded five shots on goal on 12 takes while Sacramento State took two shots that didn't offer a quality chance.

The Hornets would put the pressure on in the second half, outshooting the Vandals 10-4 in the final 45.

Idaho would take advantage of another Hornet mistake in the 72nd minute. After Jadyn Hanks drew a foul in the final third, Peters was awarded a free kick. She crossed it into the box, and it was deflected off a Hornet defender's hand, resulting in a penalty kick. Shortly after, Hannah Alfaro-Black scored her second goal in as many games, striking it past the keeper to make it 2-0.

Goalkeeper Paula Flores and the Vandal backline denied every opportunity in the remaining 18 minutes as Flores ended with three saves en route to a fourth clean sheet this season.

Peters led the team with four shots, including three on goal while Alfaro-Black pitched in three shots of her own.

The Vandals win their second straight match and move to 7-3-1 (1-0 BSC) on the season.

  • The Vandal 2-0 victory breaks the all-time series tie (8-7-1) between the two programs.
