Game Recap: Football |

Idaho Falls to UC Davis 28-26

DAVIS, CALIF. –  Idaho scored a field goal and a touchdown in the final 4:28 of the game, but a two-point attempt to force a tie came up short and the fourth-ranked Vandals fell to No. 14 UC Davis 28-26 in the fourth road game in the first five to start the season for the Vandals.

Idaho started hot, scoring on back-to-back drives to open the game. Emerson Cortez-Menjivar scored on a nine-yard shovel-pass early on Idaho's first drive, the first touchdown of his career.

After a quick UC Davis three-and-out, Nate Thomas capped an 11-play 56-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown with 4:00 to play in the first quarter.

Davis battled back to tie the game with a touchdown late in the first quarter and added another in the second quarter to tie the game.

Cameron Pope added a 43-yard field goal with 5:17 to play in the second quarter.

UC Davis opened the second half with a long kick return to set up a short drive to give the Aggies their first lead of the game with 14:18 left in the third quarter. Davis added a touchdown with a touchdown late in the third to extend their lead to 28-17 heading into the fourth.

In the third quarter, starting quarterback Jack Wagner went down with an injury and redshirt freshman Nick Josifek took over under center.

Josifek engineered a 13-play, 74-yard drive to set up a 22-yard field goal to cut the lead to 28-20 with 4:28 to play.

The Idaho defense held and Idaho took over on their own 12-yard line. Josifek went 6-9 and also rushed for 29 yards to lead Idaho down the field. He capped the drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Cortez-Mejnivar

Josifek's pass attempt on the two-point conversion sailed just out of the reach of Jordan Dwyer's hands and an onside kick attempt was unsuccessful allowing Davis to kneel the ball and run out the clock.

Idaho outgained Davis 459 yards to 312, including a 185-26 yard advantage in the run game, but turnovers and special teams cost the Vandals. Davis won the turnover battle 3-1.

Jack Wagner had not thrown an interception in his first three starts, threw two before going down with an injury in the third quarter.

Elisha Cummings led the Vandal rushing attack with 11 carries for 72 yards while Josifek and Thomas combined for an additional 96 yards on the ground. Dwyer caught eight passes for a career-high 114 yards. Cortez-Menjivar tallied four catches for 33 yards and two touchdowns.

The Vandal defense held Big Sky preseason Player of the Year Lan Larison to just 46 yards on 19 carries while sacking Davis QB Miles Hastings four times. Eight Davis receivers caught passes in the game.

Idaho (3-2) returns to the P1FCU Kibbie Dome for just the second time this season for Homecoming to host Northern Arizona. Tickets are available at govandals.com/tickets.
