MOSCOW, Idaho – Spurred by
Olivia Nelson' 17 second-half points, the Idaho Vandal women overcame a 10-point deficit to pick up a 60-56 win over Portland State Saturday afternoon at the ICCU Arena in Moscow.
Jennifer Aadland and
Rosie Schweizer both recorded double-doubles, Aadland contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds meanwhile, Schweizer had a career night, tallying 13 points and pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds.
Idaho jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but Portland State rallied and took a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Portland State continued its first-half barrage building a 25-15 lead before the Vandals cut the deficit to 25-28 on a three-pointer late in the second quarter.
The Vandals started the second half with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to 27-26, but Portland State extended the lead back to 42-36 before Idaho closed the deficit to 42-39 at the end of the third. Idaho continued to chip away but took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Anha Bukvic with 2:12 to play.
In all, Portland State led for 29:29 of the 40-minute game, but the Vandals pulled away when it mattered most before Idaho pulled away for the four-point win.
The Vandals outrebounded the Vikings 47-32, including a 21-4 advantage on the offensive boards. Idaho also forced 18 turnovers and registered 25 points off turnovers, compared to just five for Portland State.
The hard-fought win moves the Vandals to 2-1 in conference play and 11-4 overall. Next up for the Vandals is a home game against Eastern Washington on Jan. 18 at 1:00 PM, followed by a rematch with Montana on Monday at 2:00 PM.
