MISSOULA, Mont. — Idaho's postseason run came to a heartbreaking close Friday, as the Vandals fell to top-seeded Montana 3-1 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in the Big Sky Conference semifinals at South Campus Stadium.
Senior
Sara Rodgers scored both goals for Idaho (6-5-9), including a dramatic equalizer in the 90th minute to force overtime. Rodgers gave the Vandals an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute off assists from
Naomi Alvarez and
Izzy Thoma, before Montana answered twice — once in the first half and again early in the second.
With Idaho's season on the line, Rodgers struck again with eight seconds remaining in regulation, finishing a pass from Thoma from a foul kick from goalkeeper
Paula Flores to send the match into extra time.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the game went to a shootout. Both goalkeepers stopped the initial shots, but Montana proceeded to convert the next three shots in the shootout to advance.
Flores finished with two saves in her 110 minutes in goal.
The Vandals close the season with a 6-5-9 record. The final tally includes the most draws in program history.
