MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho Vandals Women's Basketball team returned home in style in its annual Hoopin' for the Holidays game, beating Western Oregon 91-63 in front of its home crowd on Sunday afternoon.
The Vandals got out to an early lead in the first quarter, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after
Sofia Ekh hit a three. WOU quickly got back into the game going on an 11-5 run to take the lead.
Hope Hassmann came back with a layup through contact, converting an and one opportunity to give the Vandals a lead they would never give up. Idaho took a 24-15 lead out of the first.
Western Oregon cut the deficit to just four points halfway through the second period, but
Katlin Kangur scored three-straight points to extend the Idaho advantage. In the last two minutes of the quarter, five points from
Ana Pinheiro, who scored a career-high 19 points, were the catalyst for a 12-2 run to close the half for Idaho, which led 43-31 at the break.
Coming out of the break,
Kyra Gardner, who had one of the best days of her career, splashed the first six Idaho points from outside, ballooning the Vandal edge to 16. The Vandal attack wouldn't be slowed down, as they led 64-45 at the end of three.
Entering the fourth, Gardner was on triple-double watch, aiming to log the first triple-double of her career and the first by a Vandal since 2018, needing three assists to make it happen. The first came when she dished a fast break pass to Cate Deaver for a lay in with 6:07 on the clock. She followed that up at 4:43, passing it out to Pinheiro who hit a three, and slid a pass between two defenders to
Sarah Brans, who hit a floater in the lane to give Gardner the historic triple-double. Brans also scored 11 points to set a new season high.
Idaho (9-4) wrapped up non-conference play with a 91-63 victory.
