Kiefer Rewrites Record Books as Vandals Compete in Split Meets

MOSCOW, Idaho - Idaho Swimming and Diving split up for a pair of dual meets over the weekend, one down in Flagstaff, and the other much closer to home.

The UI divers traveled to the home pool of Northern Arizona to compete in the second Lumberjack Diving Invite of the year for the hosts. Lauren Wierschke and Saige Anderson were the top finishers for the Vandals in the 3M, finishing with scores of 235.20 and 207.90, respectively.

The next day, in the 1M, Wierschke recorded a 224.50 in the prelims and a 238.65 in the consol round to lead Idaho.

On Friday and Saturday, the Vandals competed in a home-and-home meet with the rival just over the border, Washington State. Day 1 took place at Gibb Pool on the Cougars' campus and the second was hosted in the UI Swim Center by the Vandals. The meet would go the way of the crimson and gray with a score of 205-57 on the first day and 162-100 on the second.

The story of the weekend was sophomore Ginger Kiefer, whose career outing made multiple impacts on the UI Record Books.

After a dynamic weekend, Kiefer became the holder of three school records on the year. Her time of 1:56.43 in the 200-Yard backstroke topped the old best mark by nearly a full 1.5 seconds. But that was just the beginning.

Already the record holder in the 400-Yard Individual Medley, Kiefer improved upon her Idaho-best time on Saturday, posting a 4:17.48 and beating her previous record by three-tenths of a second.

The sophomore would tally one more for good measure in the 100-Yard IM with a record time of 57.27 seconds, giving her three school records in one meet.

Senior Ella Haskins took home the top finish for the Vandals in the 50yd freestyle with a time of 23.70. Madelyn Butler rounded out the top-three in the event, clocked at 23.98. Courtney Crawford finished second overall in the 200yd breaststroke at 2:21.73, and Grace Ruble took home second in the 100yd butterfly with a time of 56.31.

The Vandals return to action for one more meet at home on Saturday, Feb. 8, against the University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley. The meet will serve as senior day for five Idaho athletes competing in their final home competition.
