SACRAMENTO – The Idaho Vandal women's basketball team turned the ball over 24 times and gave up a late lead, falling to Sacramento State 56-5 Saturday afternoon at The Nest in Sacramento.
The Vandals led much of the game but were never able to build a significant advantage. After entering the fourth quarter with a four-point lead, the Hornets hit back-to-back shots to tie the game.
After a back-and-forth battle, the Vandals went on an 8-0 run to take a 53-48 lead with 2:48 left in the game, but the Vandals wouldn't score again. Sacramento State took the lead with a jumper with 17 seconds remaining. The Hornets closed the game with a pair of free throws to close out the three-point win.
Hope Hassmann was 7-7 from the field to lead the way with 19 points,
Jennifer Aadland tallied another double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Vandals tallied 16 first-half turnovers and eight in the second half, but were also just 4-12 (33%) from the field in the fourth-quarter.
Sacramento State was just 19-56 (33.9%) from the field in the game, but were solid in the final frame, going 7-14 (50%) in the fourth quarter.
The loss puts the Vandals are now 16-7 on the year and 8-4 in Big Sky action. Idaho will have some much-needed extended time off with only one game in the upcoming week, a road game at Eastern Washington.
