MOSCOW, Idaho – The Vandals fought to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night against the Washington State Cougars in an exciting edition of the Battle of the Palouse.
A crowd of 2,156 packed the stands, marking the second-largest soccer attendance nationwide for the day, just behind the Duke-Arkansas matchup (2,652).
Idaho got to work right from the start, with
Georgia Whitehead and
Hallie Prinos-Grumbach creating an opportunity for
Calli Chiarelli within the first five minutes. Finding the bottom right corner, Chiarelli secured the first goal of the game, as well as her first goal at Idaho.
The neighbors continued to go head-to-head, sharing even possession throughout a majority of the first half. Finding a pocket in the center, the cougars' Audrey Shackelford found the back of the net in the last 10 minutes, tying up the game at half.
Both teams were eager coming into the second half, resulting in a physical and fast-paced game. In goal,
Paula Flores faced eight shots in the second 45, letting none through. Despite their efforts, neither team could find an opening, resulting in a 1-1 tie at the end of the match.
