MOSCOW, Idaho – In a battle of grit, the Idaho Men's Tennis team sealed the Vandal Victory Friday evening after taking the first four matches of the day.
The Vandals entered the match coming off a week of recovering from illness and injuries. Despite entering the match in a weakened state, the hardy boys in black and gold rose to the top, defeating the University of Texas-Rio Grand Valley Tennis team 4-3.
The Brave and Bold took the early lead after having a clean 3-0 sweep over the Vaqueros.
Moving into singles play, the Vandals displayed their grit as Paul Jason fought in the No. 2 singles spot. Janson entered the match in poor health but endured, taking the first set 6-4. During the break, he briefly left the court after vomiting but later returned to play. Janson went marching onward and upward as he pushed forward. In one final serve, the German native sent a bomb down the court, cementing his victory in the second set 6-4.
Moments later, Chetanna Amadike tallied another win to his record in the No.1 singles position for Idaho. This is Amadike's third consecutive win in the leading singles position. Chenny's point gave UI the 4-0 advantage, defeating the UTRGV Vaqueros.
On Sunday, the Vandals faced down the Tritons of UC San Diego in a Sunday morning matinee. The Idaho Men's Tennis team got to work quickly, taking home the doubles point after Amadike and
Gabriel Moroder set the tone, defeating the Tritons No. 2 doubles in a 6-4 match. The Vandals sealed the deal with
Mikolaj Lis and
Sander Paradis, getting it done in a 7-5 match.
In singles, Lis came out hard against UCSD's Abhinav Chundurun in the No. 3 court, dominating the match 6-0, 6-1. Janson, Amadike, and Moroder fed off that energy created by Lis, bringing home wins on the No. 1, 2, and 4 courts to secure a 5-2 victory over the Tritons.
