MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho Vandals Women's Basketball (19-5, 10-1) team sealed a big rivalry win against the Montana Lady Grizzlies (7-16, 4-8), with a final score of 89-65. The new top dogs in the Big Sky Conference balled in front of another huge crowd in ICCU Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Vandals tipped off the game with a massive surge of momentum, pushing the game in their favor early.
Lorena Barbosa started a12-2 run with an impressive layup in the first four minutes of the game. The Idaho defense kept the pressure on the Lady Griz, outrebounding them 17-4, and skyrocketing to a 20-2 lead early in the first quarter.
Moving into the second, Montana started to get the shots falling, going 7-14 from the field and 3-7 beyond the arc. Despite the strong offensive quarter for Montana, Idaho stole the ball three times.
The Vandals did not let the lack of scoring in the second quarter stop them.
Kyra Gardner set the tone coming out of the half, intercepting a pass and scoring on the fast break with the first possession of the third. Debora Dos Santos also helped set the tone with an and one at 9:16. The Brazilian superstar went on to score three more unanswered points, putting Dos Santos on a personal 6-0 run against Montana. Idaho outscored Montana 21-16, going 7-12 in the field heading into the game's final 10 minutes.
With the start of the fourth quarter, the Vandals felt the buzz from the crowd to close out the game. Idaho went 66.7% from the floor and knocked down a pair of threes. The glass cleaning Vandals did not hold back in the fourth, outrebounding Montana 12-2.
Idaho has now won the last four out of five meetings against Montana and has surpassed its total win count from last season (18 wins) with its 19th win today.
UP NEXT: The Vandals will travel to Ogden, Utah on Thursday, Feb. 12, to take on Weber State. The game will tip off at 5 p.m. PT.
