Sturgis Soars to Personal Best in Vandals' Regular Season Capper

SPOKANE, Wash. - Idaho Track and Field closed its 2026 outdoor regular season Wednesday at the Whitworth Last Chance Meet, an afternoon that was highlighted by a massive career-best throw from Blake Sturgis in the javelin and Gioele Tengattini's 17.69m mark in the shot put to move his name to fourth in the Big Sky.

"We had a great result in our Last Chance meet today up in Spokane," UI's Director of Track and Field Tracy Hellman said Wednesday. "Our teams are peaking well, and now we shift our focus to the Big Sky Championships, which start next week."

Sturgis set a new facility record with his 73.21m (240'2") throw and moved to 17th in the nation, as well as second in Vandal history. The mark was nearly two meters better than his previous personal record, 71.32m (234' 0"), from April's Beach Invitational and extended his gap at the top of the conference performance list. Tengattini's throw was also his collegiate best and moves him inside the Big Sky's top-five before next week's conference meet. Idaho's throwers continued to post strong performances in the javelin, as Lindi Kessinger tossed a career-best 45.46m (149'1") throw, moving her name to fourth in the conference, joining Baylee Wroble to give the Black and Gold two athletes within the top-five of the women's javelin rankings.

Three Vandals set season-best times in the men's 800, with senior Griffen Parsells leading the pack at 1:50.01, followed by Luca Wagner in a personal record 1:50.49, and Ethan Sturdivant, who crossed the line at 1:55.84.
