Rhino 10/20/09:

Did anyone catch the new leader at the football game on Saturday?  If you didn't, you missed out.  The new camouflaged Rhino 4x4 made its debut in the Kibbie dome this past Saturday.  What better way to lead 'Akey's army' onto the field than with this beast?

I was lucky enough to be the driver of this ATV, chauffeuring Joe Vandal in style! This was my first time behind the wheel but no worries for Joe, I peaked at this picture before revving up the engine.  I can't say I read the instructions but I am a visual learner anyway.

The Rhino will make its next appearance at the Homecoming game versus Louisiana Tech on October 31st

Vandal News:

Soccer:

Idaho soccer is set to take on Boise State at Guy Wicks Field this Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The Vandals and Broncos will clash in this epic rivalry match, promising a heightened level of competitive spirit.  The Vandals have struggled recently since knocking off the undefeated Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters on October 2nd.  I'll be looking for a couple goals from leading goal scorer and DEFENDER Sari Morrison, she has netted 7 so far this season.

Golf:

If you haven't heard, the women's golf team just won their third tournament of the season.  That's three out of four and if my math skills are still up to par (pun intended), that is 75% of their tournaments.  Their last tournament of the fall season will be at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek, October 26th - 28th.

Football:

The Vandal football team is looking to keep their streak alive when Hawai'i roles into town this Saturday.  The ESPN blogger as well as the Idaho Statesman have some thoughts on the game and what the implications might be for the Vandals.

If you missed it, KREM posted a video interview with Coach Akey.

Soccer 10/9/09

The Vandals soccer team is off to its best start in history.  If you missed the match last Friday, the Vandals knocked off previously undefeated Louisiana Tech in the final 15 seconds of overtime to win 1-0.  From the perspective of a former player and coach, their success can be attributed to their poise, confidence, and an all around team effort.  Make sure to follow HERE at 3:00 p.m. today on the live blog.  You can follow the 1:00p.m. Sunday match against Utah State on the live blog HERE.

Weekend Wrap-up 10/3/09

What a phenomenal weekend for Vandal Athletics!  Soccer started things off with a win at Louisiana Tech.  The Lady Techsters were undefeated until the Vandals showed up and put them away with 15 seconds left in overtime. You couldn't ask for a more exciting way to start conference play!  Check out the recap of Friday's thriller here.

Women's cross country runner Teegan Schoch put on a show and burned the field at the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational.

I have a confession.  Saturday was the first volleyball match I have EVER been to...in my life.  I had no idea what to expect and was lucky to sit next to former Vandal 'Volleyballer' and new marketing intern/blogger Kelsey James.  Without her, I would have been lost on scoring, traditions and why one person wears a different colored jersey.  The Vandals beat Fresno State in five games.

Last but not least was the Vandal football team putting on a great performance in a packed Kibbie Dome.  If you didn't make it, you missed a great victory over Colorado State.  I'm sure you scoured the internet for articles released.  Here is a great interview with Coach Akey for your enjoyment.

Marching Band 9/30/09

I've been lucky enough to become closely acquainted with the University of Idaho marching band.   I have no personal ties, rather they have been playing Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' with nice transitions to 'Bad' and 'Beat it' outside my office window for the last three weeks.  I've even taken some time off to watch them practice their dance moves, looking good!  You can see their performance during halftime of the San Diego State football game below.

I can only anticipate what they will deliver for this Saturday's game.

Women's Golf 9/29/09

The Idaho women's golf team has been nothing short of impressive this season.  The Vandals already have two big wins under their belt - the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic by four strokes and the WSU Inland Classic by 13 strokes.  In addition, the Vandals had an even greater accomplishment this past summer that some of you might have missed. The Idaho women's golf team is highly intelligent, here is an article to prove it.

The Vandals have three more tournaments this autumn and then head into winter workouts to prepare for spring competition. One of these tournaments will be played at the Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.  Sahalee was the home to the PGA Championship in 1998 which was won by Vijay Singh.

Soccer 9/28/2009

The women's soccer team is off to their best start in team history.  One reason for this is the ice cold poise of Senior Sari Morrison when converting PKs.  She has three of them so far this season.  Sari is also the Vandals' overall leading scorer with five goals, which is impressive considering she plays from the left defensive position.

The soccer team starts conference play away at Louisiana Tech this Friday, October 2.  Make sure to come out and support the Idaho soccer team when they return home.

Here are a couple of Sari's Goals:

Have you ever been homesick? Try playing 14 matches away from home (approx. 24 days total, including travel) before having your home opener.  This is the situation the Vandal volleyball team has faced during the 2009 season. They will conclude their long road stint with a match against Eastern Washington on September 30 and then finally return to home sweet home, please no Motley Crue references!

Anyway, welcome the mighty Vandals back to Moscow on October 3 at 1 p.m.  This is the NEW start time for the Vandals' first home match of the season.

Present your Idaho-Colorado State football ticket at the volleyball match and get in for $1.

What a deal!

Fun Fact: Eastern Washington served as the summer training facility for the Seattle Seahawks for many years

 Vandal Football 9/23/2009

Here are some early season highlights from Idaho Football:

Akey's Army in the Thunderdome 9/22/09

You're probably asking yourself.  What are you talking about Idaho athletics blogger?  Akey's Army in the Thunderdome?  Well, big news Vandal fans.  ESPNU has picked up the October 3rd football game vs. Colorado State.  This means a couple of things.

First, Due to the ESPN broadcast the game time has moved from 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Second, we want to blackout the dome.  A black shirt, body paint, hat, socks, full battle suit, it all works for us.

Lastly, if you don't come to the game you're probably going to be the only one not there.  It's time to show the NATION how loud the Kibbie Dome can get.

Important to note:

Everyone:

     - This is a nationally televised game - time to showcase THE University of IDAHO!

All Fans:

     - Buy your tickets on-line, by phone or at the ticket office in the days prior to the game. If you wait to buy them at the Kibbie Dome, expect to wait in line or not get in at all.

     - The always enjoyable thunderstix will be given away, but make sure to be there early to get yours.

Students:

     - You will be REQUIRED to have a hard ticket to get into the game.  You can pick up your 1 free ticket with your student I.D. at the Kibbie Dome ticket office starting at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday September 23.

     - Buy and pick up your GUEST tickets when you get your student tickets or face the wrath of a sold out Kibbie Dome.

I was there on Saturday vs. San Diego State and it was reminiscent of the ear popping games I went to in the Kingdome as a kid. Let's pack it out this time.  Let's black it out!

Vandal Football 9/21/09

Coming off a winning performance like Saturday's, you can always expect some love from the media.  More big offense by the Vandals and this time it comes with a win.  There is also a nice article on Daniel Hardy from Friday. This doesn't include his four receptions for 76 yards on Saturday.

Woolridge is also getting some love for his big day on Saturday.

Also check out the game recap:  Vandals see the light, whip San Diego State

Tailgating 9/18/09

As I walked to my car last night I saw what Vandal pride was all about.  It was Thursday night and the RV's had already started to stake their place in the reserved lot.  With their Idaho flags flying high, these devoted fans deserve an extra pat on the back.  Tomorrow they will be the ones with a full breakfast spread that we will all be jealous of.

This is what Wikipedia had to say about tailgating.  "The term "Tailgating" originated in the parking lot of Yankee Stadium in 1957 by Angela Pisani, wife of team doctor Anthony Pisani. Mrs. Pisani set-up her station wagon "tailgate" with sandwich and other lunch items for her children and friends. A reporter inquired about her "car picnic" and she said that it's actually more of a "Tailgate" Party."

At least one good thing has come out of the Yankee organization.

Let's follow the lead of our dedicated RV Vandal fans and pack the Kibbie dome tomorrow!

Game Day Preparation 9/17/09

Tents are being erected, the cheerleaders are practicing their final moves and the band is fine tuning their performance.  Who knew that it takes weeks of preparation to be ready for the first home football game of the season?

Important things to note for this week's game:

  • - Parking lot opens at 10:00 a.m.
  • - The Battle axe is making its home debut
  • - The 2009-10 Men's basketball poster will be released and they will be autographing them at half- time on the south concourse
  • - Go to the Women's soccer game on Friday Vs. Eastern Washington at Guy Wicks Field and receive a coupon for $5 off    Saturday's football ticket price

If you have any questions, I probably don't have the answer but I can track down the right person.  sneff@uidaho.edu

 Men's Basketball 9/16/09

The Men's basketball team is gearing up for another exciting year and with that, the details commence.  Practice doesn't begin until October 16th but the team spent a late August evening in a Moscow neighborhood mugging for the camera.  I was lucky enough to go to the photo shoot and was given the glamorous task of directing traffic as we didn't want the season to end before it began.  Safety first!

The new schedule posters will be unveiled at the Idaho vs. San Diego State football game this weekend September 19th.  There will also be a halftime poster signing with the team.

Here is a little sneak preview:

Make sure you come to the game to be the first to get an autographed poster from the Men's basketball team!

The Kibbie Dome 9/15/09

The Kibbie Dome is ready for Saturday's game against San Diego State.  If you are in the Moscow area and didn't see the most phenomenal display of scaffolding on the West side of the stadium before it came down then you missed out.

There are more changes to come but for now the translucent panels are in place and the natural light is flowing.  I'm all for a good uptick in vitamin D, even when I'm in a dome.  The U of I website has a great diagram on all the changes that have been made.

As for the future, the east wall will get the same treatment, seating capacity will be bolstered by 3,600 seats to accommodate  20,000 fans, the playing field will be lowered, updates to the press box and rest rooms, addition of a club room and adding VIP parking at the west end of the dome.

Come out on Saturday the 19th to be the first to experience the upgraded Kibbie Dome!

The Battle Axe 9/14/09

Vandal Football revitalizing Tradition:

The Idaho football staff felt that revitalizing an old tradition would be a positive for the program.  The "Battle Axe" made its triumphant return at New Mexico State and showed up again at Husky Stadium this past Saturday.  The axe is carried on to the field by a differentplayer each week, chosen by the coaches, based on performance from the previous game.  At New Mexico State Joseph Dickson carries the axe while at Husky Stadium Max Komar was given the honor.

Here's a clip of Max bringing the axe onto the field at Husky Stadium.  Watch your fingers that axe looks battle ready!

Make sure to be at the game early this Saturday to see who is carrying the axe into battle for the Vandals!
