Employment
NCAA regulations allow student-athletes to earn income via employment with on-campus or off-campus entities. In order to satisfy NCAA rules, the employment income must be for work actually performed and it cannot exceed the going rate in the locality for similar work. Furthermore, the work cannot include any income received for the value of the student-athlete that results from his or her athletic reputation. If you have an interest in engaging in a NIL activity with your employer, the NIL agreement must be separate from your employment agreement. For more information, please refer to our NIL resources page.
In addition to seeking traditional employment, student-athletes may also provide private lessons for a fee. If a student-athlete provides a lesson for a fee certain NCAA guidelines must be followed. First, lessons cannot be provided at any University of Idaho facilities. Second, fees must be reasonable. Additionally, the student-athlete must actually provide a lesson. Finally, although it is not required by the NCAA, the University of Idaho compliance office requests that you maintain a log which includes the date of each lesson, the length of time spent providing each lesson, the fee charged for each lesson, and a description of the instruction provided during each lesson.
If you plan to seek employment or provide lessons for a fee, you can visit the University of Idaho Compliance Office to receive and complete the appropriate paperwork. You can also visit the form library and provide the completed version to the University of Idaho Compliance Office.
