Camps, Clinics, & Speaking Engagements

Institutional Camps or Clinics
Those owned and operated by the University of Idaho or an employee of the University of Idaho's athletics department, either on or off of Idaho's campus, which are attended by prospect-aged individuals, fall under the purview of the NCAA rules. Requirements to make such camps compliant from an NCAA perspective include:

  • Institutional sports camps or clinics must be open to any and all entrants. The only permissible limitations may be by number, age, grade level, and/or gender.
  • Camps and clinics may place emphasis on a particular sport or sports and provide specialized instruction; they may involve activities designed to improve overall skills in a sport; or they may offer a diversified experience without emphasis on instruction, practice, or competition in any particular sport.
  • The timing and location of a camp may have restrictions based upon the sport. If you have questions as to camp timing or location rules, please consult Idaho's compliance office.
  • Camp and clinics must be advertised at least fourteen (14) days prior to the first date of the camp or clinic. Photos of current student-athletes may not be used in camp/clinic advertisements unless they are a camp counselor and their photo indicates as much.

Although interaction during sports camps or clinics between prospects and those coaches employed by the camp or clinic is not subject to the recruiting calendar restrictions, staff members employed at the camp or clinic are prohibited from recruiting any prospects during the time period that a camp or clinic is conducted. This includes extending verbal or written offers of financial aid during attendance at a camp or clinic.

  • Coaches in programs other than football and basketball can have recruiting conversations with campers during the camp/clinic after August 1 of the camper's junior year in high school.
  • Coaches in football and basketball programs can have recruiting conversations with all campers during the camp/clinic.
  • Coaches who are not employed by an institutional camp or clinic, but who wish to observe prospects at the institutional camp or clinic, must adhere to appropriate recruiting contact and evaluation periods.
  • Institutional camps or clinics may not be conducted during a dead period.

Non-Institutional Camps
Sports camps or clinics that are owned or operated by an individual or organization not affiliated with the University of Idaho must conform to NCAA institutional camps/clinics rules (see above) in order to Idaho coaching staff members to act as a counselor/volunteer at  the camp. Every sport has slightly different parameters of employment. The are as follows:

  • No athletics staff members can be employed in an capacity at a camp or clinic established, sponsored, or conducted by an individual/organization that provides recruiting/scouting services concerning prospective student-athletes.
  • Employment is reported to the University of Idaho compliance office via the Non-Institutional Camp Employment Form. The form is located in the form library.
  • In sports other than basketball, football, and women's volleyball, staff members may serve in any capacity at non-institutional, privately owned camps.
  • Basketball coaches and non-coaching staff members with sport-specific responsibilities may only be employed at institutional camps owned/operated by the University of Idaho or an employee of the University of Idaho's athletic department. They cannot be employed at other institution's campus nor can they be employed at non-institutional, privately-owned camps.
  • Football coaches and non-coaching staff members with sport specific responsibilities can only be employed at institutional camps owned/operated by 4-year, NCAA member institutions or employees of 4-year, NCAA member institutions. They may not be employed at Non-NCAA institutional camps (i.e. NAIA, NJCAA, etc.) or privately owned non-institutional camps.
  • Women's Volleyball coaches and non-coaching staff members with sport-specific responsibilities may serve in any capacity at non-institutional, privately owned camps that meet NCAA legislation. They may only work these camps from Memorial day through July 31. Outside of that time, they may only be employed at institutional camps owned/operated by 4-year, NCAA member institutions or employees of 4-year, NCAA member institutions.

Fundamental Skills Camps
University of Idaho athletics department personnel may be employed in any capacity in a non-institutional, privately owned camp or clinic conducted under the following conditions:

  • The camp or clinic is designed to develop fundamental skills in a sport.
  • The camp or clinic is open to the general public.
  • The camp or clinic is conducted primarily for educational purposes and does not include material benefits for the participants.
  • Participants do not receive a recruiting presentation.
  • All participants reside in the state in which the camp or clinic is located or within 100 miles of the camp or clinic.

Speaking Engagements

  • Coaching staff members and non-coaching staff members with sport-specific responsibilities are able to speak/attend banquets where prospects are present without using a recruiting opportunity during contact, evaluation, recruiting, or quiet periods.
  • Coaching staff members and non-coaching staff members with sport-specific responsibilities are NOT able to speak/attend banquets held at a prospect's educational institution during a dead period or recruiting shutdown. They may attend a meeting/banquet in a location other that a prospect's educational institution during these recruiting time periods provided certain parameters are met.
  • Virtual attendance at a meeting or banquet where prospects are present can occur at any time provided certain parameters are met.
  • Coaches or non-coaching staff members with sport-specific responsibilities who wish to participate in a speaking engagement, banquet, or meeting need to provide a completed Coach Appearance Request Form to Idaho's compliance staff for review.
