Kelsey Betthauser

Coach Betthauser joined the Vandals in August 2022 after spending three seasons at Southern Arkansas University as an assistant coach. Betthauser leads the throws squad.

During the 2022-23 season, Betthauser mentored freshman Mia Sylvester in the shot put where she was crowned champion in both outdoor and indoor as well as tabbed the Big Sky Indoor Freshman of the Year. Betthauser also led Noah Culbertson, who took second in shot put in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. As a sophomore, Culbertson qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in shot put. Culbertson was joined by Nathyn Maller at the NCAA Preliminaries in the javelin throw. 

At South Arkansas University, Betthauser coached many conference-winning athletes from 2020-22. Betthauser was in charge of the throws squad in addtition to recruiting duties and serving as a member of the USTFCCCA DII Executive Committee on behalf of the Great American Conference. 

During the 2021-22 season, she lead three individuals to first place finishes and coached nine GAC First Team All-Conference selections. On the women's side, her athletes took first in discus, second in shot put, and third place in hammer throw. On the men's side, the athletes too first and third in discus, first through third in shot put, second in hammer throw and second in javelin. All seven of the men's athletes competing at the GAC Championships scored points, totaling 73 points (41%) of men's total at the GAC Championships. Five of the seven women scored points at the GAC championships. Kristian Schumaker threw for a program record of 57.18m in the men's javelin throw.

During the 2020-21 season, Betthauser led her athletes to five first team all-conference finishes. On the men's side, they picked up second in discus, hammer throw and shot put as well as a third place finish in shot put. On the women's side she coached the runner-up in the hammer throw. The men's squad scored 40% of all men's teams points at the GAC Championships. All returning athletes (five male, one female) improved in all their respective events from previous season while all throwers (seven male, two female) scored at least one point at the GAC Championship. 

From August 2019 to December 2019, Betthauser worked as a graduate assistant at McKendree University. She developed training plans for athletes competing in throwing events and created individualized training based on skill level and experience. She was also in charge of recruiting prospective student-atheltes.

In 2018, Betthauser worked at MERGE Performance Insititute as a strength coach in Dubuque, Iowa. At Merge, Betthauser designed and implemented training plans for individual clients ranging in age from 10-60 years old. She primarily worked with the local high school basketball and swim teams on injury prevention and strength. 

From May 2018 to August 2018, Betthauser completed an internship at EXOS in San Diego, California. At EXOS, Betthauser completed 500 hours of learning, shadowing, and coaching athletes. She works with athletes ranging in age from middle school through professional levels and led NFL groups in weekly regeneration sessions. 

In undergrad, Betthauser competed for the University of Dubuque Track and Field team as a thrower from 2016-19. At Dubuque, she was a very decorated athlete holding the school record for women's discus and was a USTFCCCA Academic All American. In her senior season, Betthauser was the 2019 ARC Champion in weight throw and discus, NCAA Indoor Championship Qualifier in weight throw, NCAA Outdoor Championship Qualifier in hammer throw and discus and earned the Senior Academic Athletic Award (awarded to the senior student-athlete with the highest GPA among all student-athletes at UD). In 2018, Betthauser was the 2018 ARC Champion in weight throw. In 2017, she earned All-IIAC in javelin and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in discus. 

Betthauser has many certifications under her belt. She has a USTFCCCA Throwing Event Specialist Certification, NSCA - CSCS, XPS Human Performance Specialist as well as CPR/AED certified.

Originally from Ellsworth, Wisconsin Coach Betthauser graduated from the University of Dubuque in Iowa in 2019 with a double major in wellness and exercise science, and in psychology. She went on to attain a master’s degree in Kinesiology from Southern Arkansas University.
