Vandal men lose to Boise State

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State's experience, depth and sharp shooting once again were too much for the University of Idaho as the Vandals lost for the second time this season to their in-state rival.

Senior Tyrone Hayes was the only Vandal to reach double figures as the Broncos won 79-64 with an effort that featured 19 points from freshman Coby Karl, 16 from senior Bryan Defares and 10 from junior Jermaine Blackburn.

"I'm really, really, really, really disappointed we couldn't get one of these this year," coach Leonard Perry said as the Vandals dropped to 2-5. "I think we're getting better but with the teams we're playing right now, it doesn't show."

The Vandals stuck with their plan, which meant making good offensive choices and beating the fleet Broncos back on defensive, for a competitive first half. But it was a competitive half that ended on a sour note when Defares drilled a long-range 3 as time expired to give BSU a 10-pointo halftime edge.

"That hurt," Perry said. "That really hurt."

The Broncos gradually increased their lead as the second half unfolded before making it a convincing 19-point spread with a 9-2 run late in the period.

"We didn't execute defensively at the end of the game," Perry said. "It got away from us. They made some shots. Some of them were tough shots. Some of them we broke down."

The Broncos definitely warmed up as the game progressed. In the first half of the first half, they were shooting in the 30 percent range. By halftime it was up to 42 and by game's end, it was 50 after a torrid 61 percent second-half clip - largely the impact of second chances off offensive rebounds.

Conversely, the Vandals struggled. They finished at 40 percent but often were left shaking their heads at shots that didn't fall. When they had chances to close the gap, shots - free throws included - missed the mark.

"They made some big plays down the stretch," Perry said. "You can only hold that team from scoring for so long.

"I have to give them credit. They did a good job."
