Former University of Idaho tennis player and current assistant coach Zelijka Vidic advanced to the quarterfinals of the GPTC 105th Nike Championships in Beaverton, Ore.
In her Friday quarterfinal, Vidic lost 6-3, 6-3 to Mycala Headburg.
She reached the quarterfinals after defeating Annie Dandurand, 6-1, 6-0, which came after an opening-round bye.
"She was certainly one of the best tennis players in UI history in both doubles and singles and holds many records," tennis coach Greg South said.
Vidic, who had not played in 14 months because of knee surgeries, is beginning her professional tennis career by competing in tournaments throughout the Pacific Northwest.
"Zelijka is an extraordinary talent and is just beginning to develop that talent. She's worked hard and continued to develop. Those benefits are coming into fruition," South said. "She's in her element, she continues to bring honor and recognition both to herself and the university.
"It's wonderful to see a good person succeed. This is an exciting time for Idaho tennis."
Before competing at Beaverton, she was champion at the Northeast Washington Champions and placed second at the Inland Empire Open Championships.
"[At the Northeast Washington Championships], she was just dominant," South said.
Vidic has just completed her graduate studies and currently is pursuing a doctorate degree.
