Vandal men struggle in second half; fall to Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - After leading by as many as 13 points in the first half, the University of Idaho men's basketball team gave way to a 45-30 domination by Cal State Fullerton in the second half to lose 70-59 in Big West action Saturday night at Titan Gym.

The culprit this time for the Vandals, now 5-11 overall and 2-5 in the conference, was yielding second-chance opportunities to the Titans. Fullerton is 6-10, 2-5.

"They broke our backs with second-chance points," UI coach Leonard Perry said. "We got the stops we needed when the game was on then we gave up second-chance shots."

The Titans pulled down 10 offensive rebounds in the second half and had 14 for the game in gaining control of the valuable territory in the paint. But the damage was done not by premier center Pape Sow, who was limited to nine points and eight rebounds, but by David Warsaw and Yaphett King. Warsaw and King combined for 28 points with Warsaw leading the Titans with 16.

"Those are guys who don't normally score as well as they scored tonight," Perry said. "You just can't account for that. We allowed second shots and they buried second shots."

Warsaw was a key component in Fullerton's rally, which began when the Titans went on an 10-2 run to whittle a 20-7 UI lead to five points with just over three minutes left in the first half. While the Vandals made one more surge to a double-digit lead, it was short lived as the Titans closed to 29-25 at the half on King's 3-pointer.

The back-and-forth pace continued through the first 10 minutes of the second half. With the Vandals clinging to a 44-43 lead, Fullerton turned the tide with a 10-0 run that eventually led to leads of as many as 13 points as the Titans never trailed again.

As much as the Titans took control of the paint in the second half, the hot hand that fueled the Vandals in the first deserted them in the second. After hitting 52.4 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, the Vandals sank to 32 percent in the final 20. Conversely, the easy inside shots pushed Fullerton's second-half shooting to 53.8 percent - a far cry from the 36 they hit in the first.

"What really killed us was the second shots," said junior guard Tanoris Shepard, who finished with 10 points. "I don't see any other cause in this game that would make it turn like it did."

Senior Tyrone Hayes led the Vandals with 17 points.
