BOISE- The University of Idaho women's soccer team lost its fifth game of the season, falling 1-0 to rival Boise State University (6-3-0) in Boise, Idaho Friday (Sept. 24). The Vandals (2-5-0) only managed eight shots in the game and can now only hope for a three-way tie in the Governors Cup standings.
"They were just plain better than we were today," Vandal head coach Arby Busey said. "They have been finding ways to win all season and that is something we have not figured out how to do yet. They threw some stuff at us in the first half that we were not prepared for and then we were unable to make the needed adjustments in the second half."
Despite being outshot 11-4 in the first half, the Vandals were able to keep the Broncos from scoring as the game was locked at 0-0 at halftime. The game remained scoreless until Boise State player Lisa Balsama was able to beat Vandal goalkeeper Lindsay Smith on a breakaway in the 86th minute for the game-winning goal.
Smith had six saves and allowed the one goal in 90-minutes and Melissa Martinazzi lead the Vandals with four shots.
"The credit goes to Boise State in this game because they gave us a really tough time. They shut down our attacking players and we have to score to be able to win," Busey said.
Idaho's next game is their conference opener at Pacific on Oct. 1.
