BOISE, Idaho - The University of Idaho football team fell 65-7 to archrival Boise State Saturday night before a sellout crowd at Bronco Stadium.
"It was ugly," said Nick Holt moments after his first game as Vandal head coach. "We were sloppy. It shows we have a lot of work to do."
The Broncos out-gained the Vandals 572-212. The 58-point margin was the largest in the history of the UI-BSU series.
"It was my worst fear because the tackling wasn't good," Holt said. "We'll learn from this. We have to get back to work. That's the bottom line."
The Vandals' time of possession was 32:13, compared to 27:47 for the Broncos. It was total yardage and field position, though, that told the complete story. The Broncos' decisive yardage advantage came despite having the short field most of the first half.
Bronco starting quarterback Jared Zabransky completed 11 of 16 passes for 234 yards and rushed for three touchdowns.
Vandal starting quarterback Michael Harrington completed 13 of 27 passes for 91 yards.
"Everything that could go wrong did go wrong," Harrington said. "They're a good team, but we're a good team, too."
Boise State scored on three of its first four possessions to forge a 21-0 lead before the end of the first quarter. The Broncos scored eight touchdowns overall.
It was the kind of game where almost nothing seemed to go well for the Vandals, with the exception of an exhilarating 71-yard touchdown scamper by freshman running back Jayson Bird with 1:20 to play to prevent Idaho from being shut out for the first time in the 34-year history of the series.
