SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The University of Idaho women's soccer team split its decisions over the weekend as it fell 4-1 at the hands of No. 22 Utah Sunday afternoon.
The Vandals fell to 1-2-0 for the season while the Utes remained unbeaten at 4-0-0.
"We will never face a team this quick and technically skilled again," Idaho head coach Pete Showler said. "They were a very big, physical team and there is no doubt they are a top 25 team in the nation. They used their speed and really got us back on our heels."
Utah took control right away and built a 3-0 lead with goals in the sixth, 22nd, and 38th minutes. The Vandals made an attempt at a comeback as Adriane Kehl headed in an Eija Hodgin pass with 15 second remaining in the first half to make the score 3-1 at halftime. The goal was the first of the season for Kehl and the seventh of her career.
Idaho made some halftime adjustments and was able to even out the game in the second half. Although the Utes added an insurance goal in the 75th minutes, Showler was pleased with the team's response after the break.
"We came out in a different formation in the second half and felt we matched them play-for-play," Showler said. "We worked hard to get at them and battled hard and I was glad we were able to give them more of a game in that second half. I am happy with the way this team is playing at different points in the game, we just need to string it together for 90 minutes."
Utah dominated the shots 14-5 in the first half, but Idaho cut the margin to 9-5 in the second half and trailed 23-10 in the category at the end of the game. Megan Dunn led the Vandals with three shots and Lindsay Smith grabbed seven saves but allowed four goals in 90 minutes.
This game was only the second time the Vandals have matched up against a ranked opponent. In 2004, Idaho took on No. 12 Pepperdine in a game that was called due to lightning.
The Vandals now return home for a game versus Northern Colorado Friday (Sept. 9) at 3 p.m., and will then hit the road again for a contest with Idaho State Sunday (Sept. 11) at noon.
