MOSCOW - The Vandal swim team put up an honorable fight against the Oregon State Beavers Saturday at the UI Swim Center. Idaho gave the Beavers a good scare, but OSU prevailed, coming out on top, 141-121.
"We made them sweat," Idaho head coach Tom Jager said.
"We were clearly overmatched, but we didn't care. We don't worry about who we swim. It was good to see them get up and swim hard. They just love to race."
Jager attributed the exciting meet as a team effort, but along with the teamwork came five individual wins, including two by Kacie Hogan (100 back, 200 back). Other individual victories were by JoJo Miller (200 breast), Sara Peterson (100 free), and Adriana Quirke (200 free).
"Those wins were great," Jager said. "They weren't recruited by these PAC-10 schools like Oregon State, and now they are beating them."
The close score of the meet kept the crowd alive through the end, and Jager gives a lot of credit to those supportive fans.
"This is great venue, and it's hard for teams to come swim here," Jager said. "The crowd was loud and the band was great."
Idaho's final regular season meet will be next Saturday as they host Washington State, who beat OSU Friday in a tight match. Jager said the Vandal's performance against OSU gives them a boost going into next week.
"This gives them a lot of confidence," Jager said. "It's always a focus for Idaho to beat WSU, and we have a lot of momentum right now."
"Today was a great team effort," Jager said.
"From top to bottom, everyone swam hard today."
