Vandals win game in Honolulu; but lose match

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The University of Idaho fell 3-1 to No. 16 Hawai'i, Friday night at the Stan Sheriff center in Honolulu. Idaho won a game against the Rainbow Wahine for the first time in the five-match history between the two schools.

 

The Vandals with the loss fall to 7-14 and 6-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Rainbow Wahine improves to 16-5 and 8-1 in the WAC.

 

Hawai'i opened the game with a 30-17 win in game one. The Rainbow Wahine opened the match on an 8-point run and never looked back on the way to the 30-17 tally. Idaho got as close as four points trailing 9-5 and 12-8 as they went on an 8-4 run of their own.

 

The Vandals tied the match with a victory in game two as they used a five-point run to open a 28-22 lead, late in the match. The Vandals out hit the Rainbow Wahine, by nearly 100 points, on the way to victory in game two, stroking .350, but limiting Hawai'i to .237. The Vandals then hung on to win 30-25. Hawai???i came on strong in games three and four winning both to seal their victory.

 

Four Vandals had double-digit kills led by Amanda Bowman's 17. Sarah Conwell was second as she collected 11, followed by Lauren Mathis and Debbie Pederson who both had 10 kills.  Bowman collected a double-double as she also pulled in 11 digs. Kelsey Yonker and Stacy Sode led the squad with 13 digs apiece.

 

Idaho returns to action when they play in front of a Memorial Gym crowd for the first time in nearly a month to face Louisiana Tech, November 2 at 7 p.m.
