MOSCOW, Idaho - The Utah State Aggies used a 37-0 run during Wednesday night's men's basketball game to blow out the Idaho Vandals, 80-42 at the Cowan Spectrum. The Vandals fall to 4-18 on the season, 1-10 in WAC play.
"We played bad tonight against a really solid team," Idaho head coach Leonard Perry said. "It was very reminiscent of the Fresno State game at Fresno."
The Aggies struck first in the opening half and eventually had a 13 point lead at 22-9 with 11:30 remaining. The Vandals responded and a 3-pointer by Nebojsa Jakovljevic at the 7:48 mark cut the lead to eight at 25-17.
Idaho went ice cold from the floor at that point and Utah State took advantage with a 19-0 run over the next seven and a half minutes to close out the half. During that span the Vandals went 0-for-9 from the floor and committed five turnovers.
The drought continued into the second half as the Vandals went 0-for-15 from the floor during the first nine minutes and the Aggies capitalized with an 18-0 run. David Dubois hit a free throw at the 13:56 mark to give the Vandals their first point of the half, but the team did not score a field goal until the 11:48 mark when Keoni Watson hit a 3-pointer. When it was all said and done the Vandals went a full 16 minutes off the game clock without a field goal, and had just one point during that time.
"When it rains it pours," Perry said. "Some of the shots that we had opportunities to make, we didn't make them."
The Aggies led by as many as 50 points at 78-28 with 5:11 remaining before walking away with the 38 point victory.
Utah State shot 57 percent (30-53) from the floor for the game and 46 percent (11-24) from the 3-point line. They also out-rebounded the Vandals, 37-to-24.
Idaho was 15-of-51 (29 percent) from the floor for the game. Watson and Tanoris Shepard combined for 10 of the Vandals??? 15 field goals with five apiece. Watson led the team with 13 points while Shepard added 12.
"There is nowhere but up, We don't have a choice," Perry said. "We'll have the kids prepared for Montana State on Saturday."
The Vandals (4-18, 1-10) face Montana State in a non-conference game on Sat., Feb. 18 at Bozeman, Mont. Game time is 6:05 p.m. PT.
