Vandals bust losing skid; drop Cougars in home opener

MOSCOW - The University of Idaho volleyball team ended a season-long losing streak and program-worst tying 10-match skid, with a 3-0 sweep of Washington State, Friday night at Memorial Gym. Game scores were 30-23, 30-20, 30-28.

Idaho out hit Washington State .279 to .174, including out stroking the visiting Cougars by a .389 to .182 mark in game two.

"This was the best match for our outside hitters in a while, but the big key for the win was we cut down on our errors," head coach Debbie Buchanan said. "It would have been easy for the team to hang their heads down, but they aren't. We are a good team and we will get through this. I am really proud of the character the team has shown."

Senior Saxony Brown had a solid day for the Vandals as she hit .176 while collecting six kills. The Nanaimo B.C., native set up 28 kills.

"It felt great to come home and play in our own gym for the first time this season," Brown said. "It was a little different tonight since we had played them so recently we knew what to expect, but they did change some things around."

Amanda Bowman also had a great match for the Vandals as she notched 10 kills while hitting .184. The senior also collected five digs and a block assist.

"It was great to get out first win, we all know what a win feels like now and we know we can do it," Bowman said. "The crowd was awesome tonight, when we get a block and the whole gym rumbles that's awesome. This is definitely a building block for the team it's good to know we can do this, especially with some tough conference games ahead."

The Vandals enjoy a brief break before a trip to Las Cruces, N.M. to face the Western Athletic Conference leading Aggies of New Mexico State, September 21. The match begins at 6 p.m., PDT.
